The Ultimate Move Out Cleaning Checklist for Tenants and Landlords
Jul 4, 2026 8 min read

Moving out is stressful enough without worrying about your security deposit. Whether you're a tenant hoping to get every dollar back or a landlord preparing a property for new tenants, a thorough move out clean makes all the difference. Use this room by room checklist to leave the place spotless.
Work top to bottom and back to front in each room so dust and debris fall onto surfaces you haven't cleaned yet. Gather your supplies first: an all purpose cleaner, degreaser, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush, glass cleaner, and a vacuum, so you never have to stop mid task.
Kitchen
- Degrease and wipe down all countertops and backsplashes
- Clean inside and outside of the oven, stovetop, and microwave
- Empty, defrost, and sanitize the refrigerator and freezer
- Wipe cabinets inside and out; remove all crumbs and liners
- Scrub the sink, faucet, and drain until they shine
Bathrooms
- Descale and disinfect the toilet, tub, and shower
- Remove soap scum and hard water spots from tiles and glass
- Clean mirrors, counters, and cabinet interiors
- Wipe down exhaust fans and light fixtures
Living Areas and Bedrooms
- Dust all surfaces, shelves, baseboards, and ceiling fans
- Wipe light switches, outlets, and door handles
- Clean windows, sills, and window tracks
- Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors thoroughly
- Spot clean walls and remove any nail holes if agreed
Final Touches
- Empty every closet, drawer, and storage space
- Take out all trash and recycling
- Replace burnt out light bulbs and HVAC filters
- Do a final walk through and photograph the clean space
